Serving Our Seniors Citizens
Kevin
has worked many years volunteering his time to serve the seniors of Jefferson
Parish,
Louisiana.
He was elected as chairman of the Jefferson Parish Senior Citizen Task Force
under the Parish President in 2002, 2003 and in 2004.
He has served as the chairman of four senior citizens Expos where seniors
can obtain information, free food, and enjoy live entertainment. The more
recent Expo was held on October 9 at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner, Louisiana.
The Expo was attended by over 6,000 seniors and caregivers from throughout
Southeast Louisiana who visited the 120 booths consisting of businesses, nonprofit
agencies, hospitals, and local, state and federal government agencies. A king
and queen were selected for the Expo, as well as recognition given to the
oldest man and the oldest woman at the event.
The
Jefferson Parish Senior Citizen Task Force conducts several projects annually
to improve the lives of local seniors. The Task Force has a cell phone program
in which the group solicits old cell phones from the public. These phones
are reprogrammed by Junior Sheriff's Deputies to be able to
dial 9 - 1- 1. The cell phones and charges are then given to needy seniors
who can call for assistance in the event of an emergency. The Task Force produces
a telephone directory for seniors consisting of key phone numbers the seniors
use throughout the year. The Task Force also produces a larger directory which
is distributed solely to nonprofit agencies, hospitals, and government agencies
which provides services to seniors. This comprehensive directory details all
of the services available to seniors. This group also provides an award given
to an outstanding senior volunteer in the community. The Task Force works
closely with other agencies to support their missions and goals in providing
services to seniors.
Kevin was instrumental in starting the "Gifts for Seniors" program. He asked the general public and schools to provide nonperishable food and goods which would be distributed to needy, homebound seniors in the area during holiday time. School children assembled gift bags for seniors containing essential personal hygiene products, food, candy, and other essential items. The program was executed by Kevin for two years, then the Parish President's Office adopted the program.
Kevin requests
that persons step up to the plate and help the seniors in their community
by volunteering through American Association for Retired Persons (AARP) or
their government agencies providing services to seniors. Kind gestures to
seniors are always appreciated whether it is the offer to bring them to a
doctor's appointment, surprise them with a meal, or take them on an outing.
Many seniors need repairs done to their homes. Kevin personally witnessed
the poverty in which some seniors live. Helping a senior will change their
life, as well as your life.
The following pictures are from several of the Senior Expositions which Kevin
chaired. These are followed by pictures of some of the gift boxes and bags
distributed to seniors during holiday time.
