Mardi Gras Doubloons

This package contains 25 Mardi Gras doubloons tossed from the floats during Mardi Gras parades. Each Mardi Gras "Krewe," or club, mints their own doubloon for each year's parade. The front of the doubloon remains the same with the insignia of the krewe. The reverse, or back, of the doubloon changes each year to reflect the krewe's theme for that year. The first doubloons were minted in 1960 and tossed to the crowds by the Krewe of REX, which is commonly known as "REX, the King of Carnival." REX continued the tradition of being the only Mardi Gras organization to mint and toss doubloons to the crowds until the mid 1960s when other krewes adopted the tradition. Mardi Gras doubloons measure approximately 4 cm across and are typically made of aluminum. The aluminum doubloons are often left plain, resulting in a silver doubloon, or can be colored any color of the rainbow. Doubloons also come in heavy metals, such as copper, antique bronze, bright bronze, silver oxide, solid .999 fine silver, and gold.

The doubloons offered in this package are a variety of colors from a variety of Mardi Gras krewes from differing years.
They are all aluminum.
